System and Network Engineer

Your UNIX / Linux systems and router / firewalls are lucky to have you as their admin. You have a passion for designing and building systems that work and keep working, rain or shine.
As an engineer you have a critical and hands-on approach to software and technologies. You like finding ways to make your deployment and maintenance jobs easier, so you can spend more time fixing, improving, innovating and learning new things. As a hacker you know that learning hands-on often works just as good or better than reading a manual. You prefer open source code over 'enterprise' software and you feel the journey is half the fun. As a colleague, you can work independently, but also like working closely together and sharing responsibilities for the work at hand. You appreciate the human factor in technology.

Context of position:

Greenhost offers green and sustainable web hosting and Virtual Private Servers and works on several projects to facilitate safe means of communication for journalists and activists all over the world. We stand for a green and sustainable approach towards technology and work environment, we advocate an open Internet and digital freedom and we share an innovative approach to technology. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team with a focus on our web hosting environment, working together with like-minded people in an informal setting with a flat management structure.

Activities and tasks:

  • Troubleshooting, debugging, monitoring and documenting current infrastructure,
  • Automating systems deployments and further developing existing processes,
  • Migrating existing platforms and networks or setting up new platforms,
  • Selecting, evaluating, developing and integrating new technologies,
  • Monthly on-call duties.

Soft-hardware skills:

  • Fluency with UNIX/Linux user land environments (Debian preferred),
  • Good understanding of the Linux kernel and KVM and/or Xen hypervisors,
  • Experience with or solid knowledge of the following systems:
    • Network- and cluster file systems like NFS and Ceph,
    • TCP/IP, routers, firewalls, VPNs, Ethernet, VLANs, Wireshark/tcpdump,
    • Containers and Cluster (LXC, chroots, docker and/or Kubernetes),
    • Webserver and proxies like Apache, Nginx and HAProxy,
    • Mysql and/or MariaDB,
    • Configuration automation (Ansible, Chef, CFEngine or similar),
  • Programming skills in at least 1 of { Python, Perl, C, bash, Go }.
